Why pay for therapy?

There are a lot of questions around paying for therapy and here are just a few of the reasons why investing in your mental health can be really helpful, especially with long NHS waiting lists in the UK for common conditions like anxiety and depression.

Faster access (no long waiting lists)

With services like NHS talking therapies, you can sometimes wait weeks or months (that’s if you’re lucky). Private counselling often means you can be seen within days.

You choose the counsellor that feels like the right fit

You’re not just assigned to someone, you can pick your counsellor based on the things that matter to you, like their approach, personality, specialism, and just whether you click. That matters more than people think and the relationship is a huge part of what makes therapy work. I always say, still reach out even if I am not the counsellor for you I know others that I’d recommend.

More consistent, longer-term support

Some free services will only be able to offer limited sessions (e.g. 6–12). Private therapy can go at your pace whether that’s short-term or open-ended.

Flexibility around your life

Evenings, weekends, online, in-person, you’re more likely to find something that fits your schedule rather than squeezing into what’s available.

More tailored approach

Private counsellors often have the freedom to work more creatively or integratively, rather than sticking to a strict model or timeframe.

Privacy and comfort

Some people feel more at ease knowing they’re outside of systems like the NHS or employer-linked services.
